The MLB Divisional Frontrunners

Now that the Trade Deadline has come and gone, we can safely assume that most trades have been made. With that in mind, here’s a quick post on who the division favorites are as we come down the home stretch in the MLB season.

AL East

The Red Sox answered all questions with their four game sweep of the division rival Yankees earlier this month, as they are now on pace to have a shot at the 2001 Mariners’ single-season wins record (116).

AL Central

Hmm, let me think here….any one of four teams under .500 or the same squad that won 22 games in a row last year? I think I’m going to go with the Indians.

AL West

The Oakland A’s have been surging lately, but the defending World Series champs look as strong as ever. Expect another #HoustonStrong season.

NL East

Arguably the most fun division in baseball right now, I have to give the slight edge to the Philadelphia Phillies. I wrote about this race earlier, claiming that Philadelphia’s veterans have a better shot at keeping this magical season alive than do the Braves wunderkinds. Add in Asdrubal Cabrera and Wilson Ramos and I think this Phils team is a serious NL threat.

NL Central

Yes, the Brewers are the fun pick here (as they were last year) but the Cubs’ experience and overall talent will help them prevail (as they did last year). Plus, the Brewers have been trending down recently as the Cubs have cemented themselves back on top of the National League (despite the absence of Kris Bryant).

NL West

I hate to say it, I really do. They have one of the best records in baseball since mid-May and have added two great players to their middle infield. Throw in a now-healthy Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers are once again one of the top teams in the National League. The Diamondbacks got off to an amazing start, but they are far too inconsistent for my liking, and the Rockies are simply the Rockies.
